Do you feel that tenure allows professors to get away with teaching less?

@calwillnol As a current university student studying majoring in both Physics and Computer Science I have to agree with you for the most part. I find that when I ask tough questions to the prof, it is perhaps the greatest learning experience. Unfortunately there are some professors out there who can either not answer the question well or seem to dodge the question entirely. Regardless when I have a prof who answers tough questions it really motivates me to learn.

calwillnol: Did you mean "syntax?" What's "syntrax?"
calwillnol (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
kevinb828 Your grammar and syntrax are atrocious! How many great books have you read? Or do you just tweet and make ridiculous comments on Youtube?
calwillnol (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
kevinb828. As a professor iin both English Lit and Advanced Calculus I had so many students such as you who expected that we spoonfeed you. How about a little effort on your part? Question authority. Tell your profs that you want to learn to think! You need to learn analysis and synergy but that does take a certain amt of energy on your part.
I got so tired of lazy students such as you!

You do present a good point. There is a lot of unnecessary information that is taught. In the Italian educational system, high schools are set up like American colleges. Which sucks on the one hand if you're undecided, but it also focuses your education on a couple of subjects, instead of taking all different subjects in high school, and then taking core courses in college, you learn about what you want.

I think the real reason it's lacking is because there isn't enough competition because there isn't school choice from K-12 levels, and also because a lot of it is over information you never use. If people REALLY needed this information, they wouldn't forget it because they'd be using it. However if you don't use it, you tend to forget it as it gets overwritten in your brain by information you DO use. |
